Joyce Behrens

Joyce Ann Behrens, age 66, of Bellevue, a beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away at 9:20 p.m. Saturday September 5, 2009 at Overlake Hospital. Joyce had a long battle with cancer that she fought with strength, courage, and grace, winning her final victory as she entered into eternal life in the full presence of the Lord.

Joyce was born April 20, 1943 in Quincy, IL to Mary Mae and Robert Behrens. She graduated from Quincy High School in 1961 and went on to study laboratory medicine, earning her BS from the University of Illinois in 1965 and her MS from the University of Minnesota in 1971, specializing in hematology.

Joyce began teaching at the University of Washington in 1971, where she was Co-Director of the Hematology Laboratory at the UW Medical Center and Assistant Professor, Dept. of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Medical Technology. She had a passion for students and taught for over 30 years before her retirement at the end of 2002.

Joyce was a member of Westminster Chapel in Bellevue where she enjoyed singing in the choir and serving in a variety of other ministries. Her greatest ministry was to share her faith and the love of Jesus Christ with all those around her, a ministry she carried out faithfully until the end. Joyce enjoyed traveling, sewing, needlepoint, and other crafts, and she enjoyed spending time with her family most of all. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Sue (Bill) Bauer of Redmond; brother, Gregory (Nancy) Behrens of Indianapolis, IN; nephew, Eric Bauer of Bothell; niece, Lisa (Kevin) Zobrist of Everett; nephew, Paul (Christie) Behrens of Hannibal, MO; niece, Kristin (Bryan) Johnson of Sacramento, CA; and nephew, Peter (Ellie) Behrens of Red Wing, MN. She is also survived by many dear friends, colleagues, and former students.
